    On the compact wave dynamics of tensegrity beams in multiple dimensions

    This work presents a numerical investigation on the nonlinear wave dynamics of tensegrity beams in 1D, 2D and 3D arrangements. The simulation of impact loading on a chain of tensegrity prisms and lumped masses allows us to apply on a smaller scale recent results on the propagation of compression solitary waves in 1D tensegrity metamaterials. Novel results on the wave dynamics of 2D and 3D beams reveal - for the first time - the presence of compact compression waves in two- and three-dimensional tensegrity lattices with slender aspect ratio. The dynamics of such systems is characterized by the thermalization of the lattice nearby the impacted regions of the boundary. The portion of the absorbed energy moving along the longitudinal direction is transported by compression waves with compact support. Such waves emerge with nearly constant speed, and slight modifications of their spatial shape and amplitude, after collisions with compression waves traveling in opposite direction. The analyzed behaviors suggest the use of multidimensional tensegrity lattices for the design and additive manufacturing of novel sound focusing devices

    Shielding Effectiveness Measurements of Drywall Panel Coated with Biochar Layers

    Shielding against electromagnetic interference (EMI) is a critical issue in civil applications generally solved with metal screens. In recent years, the properties of many composite materials filled with carbon nanotubes or graphene or materials with a carbon-based coating have been analysed with the aim of using them for electromagnetic shielding applications. Among other carbon materials, biochar, derived from biomass and characterized by high carbon content, emerges as a sustainable, renewable, environmentally friendly, and inexpensive material. In this paper, commercial biochar thermally treated at 750 °C is used to coat with several layers common building components such as drywall panel. Shielding effectiveness is measured in the frequency band 1–18 GHz for normal incidence and skew angles 10, 20 and 30 deg in a full anechoic chamber with double ridged, vertically and horizontally polarized broadband horn antennas. The results show that the proposed biochar-coated drywall panels provide a good shielding effectiveness compared to similar solutions, with the advantage of a less expensive and easier to realize building material

    Shielding Properties of Cement Composites Filled with Commercial Biochar

    The partial substitution of non-renewable materials in cementitious composites with eco-friendly materials is promising not only in terms of cost reduction, but also in improving the composites’ shielding properties. The water and carbon content of a commercial lignin-based biochar is analyzed with thermal gravimetric analysis. Cementitious composite samples of lignin-based biochar with 14 wt.% and 18 wt.% are realized. Good dispersion of the filler in the composites is observed by SEM analysis. The samples are fabricated in order to fit in a rectangular waveguide for measurements of the shielding effectiveness in the X-band. A shielding effectiveness of 15 dB was obtained at a frequency of 10 GHz in the case of composites with 18 wt.% biochar. Full-wave simulations are performed by fitting the measured shielding effectiveness to the simulated shielding effectiveness by varying material properties in the simulator. Analysis of the dimensional tolerances and thickness of the samples is performed with the help of full/wave simulations. Lignin-based biochar is a good candidate for partial substitution of cement in cementitious composites, as the shielding effectiveness of the composites increases substantially

    Relationship between coronary plaque morphology of the left anterior descending artery and 12 months clinical outcome: the CLIMA study

    Abstract Aims The CLIMA study, on the relationship between coronary plaque morphology of the left anterior descending artery and twelve months clinical outcome, was designed to explore the predictive value of multiple high-risk plaque features in the same coronary lesion [minimum lumen area (MLA), fibrous cap thickness (FCT), lipid arc circumferential extension, and presence of optical coherence tomography (OCT)-defined macrophages] as detected by OCT. Composite of cardiac death and target segment myocardial infarction was the primary clinical endpoint. Methods and results From January 2013 to December 2016, 1003 patients undergoing OCT evaluation of the untreated proximal left anterior descending coronary artery in the context of clinically indicated coronary angiogram were prospectively enrolled at 11 independent centres (clinicaltrial.gov identifier NCT02883088). At 1-year, the primary clinical endpoint was observed in 37 patients (3.7%). In a total of 1776 lipid plaques, presence of MLA 180° (HR 2.4, 95% CI 1.2–4.8), and OCT-defined macrophages (HR 2.7, 95% CI 1.2–6.1) were all associated with increased risk of the primary endpoint. The pre-specified combination of plaque features (simultaneous presence of the four OCT criteria in the same plaque) was observed in 18.9% of patients experiencing the primary endpoint and was an independent predictor of events (HR 7.54, 95% CI 3.1–18.6). Conclusion The simultaneous presence of four high-risk OCT plaque features was found to be associated with a higher risk of major coronary events

    COVID-19 Severity in Multiple Sclerosis: Putting Data Into Context

    Background and objectives: It is unclear how multiple sclerosis (MS) affects the severity of COVID-19. The aim of this study is to compare COVID-19-related outcomes collected in an Italian cohort of patients with MS with the outcomes expected in the age- and sex-matched Italian population. Methods: Hospitalization, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, and death after COVID-19 diagnosis of 1,362 patients with MS were compared with the age- and sex-matched Italian population in a retrospective observational case-cohort study with population-based control. The observed vs the expected events were compared in the whole MS cohort and in different subgroups (higher risk: Expanded Disability Status Scale [EDSS] score > 3 or at least 1 comorbidity, lower risk: EDSS score ≤ 3 and no comorbidities) by the χ2 test, and the risk excess was quantified by risk ratios (RRs). Results: The risk of severe events was about twice the risk in the age- and sex-matched Italian population: RR = 2.12 for hospitalization (p < 0.001), RR = 2.19 for ICU admission (p < 0.001), and RR = 2.43 for death (p < 0.001). The excess of risk was confined to the higher-risk group (n = 553). In lower-risk patients (n = 809), the rate of events was close to that of the Italian age- and sex-matched population (RR = 1.12 for hospitalization, RR = 1.52 for ICU admission, and RR = 1.19 for death). In the lower-risk group, an increased hospitalization risk was detected in patients on anti-CD20 (RR = 3.03, p = 0.005), whereas a decrease was detected in patients on interferon (0 observed vs 4 expected events, p = 0.04). Discussion: Overall, the MS cohort had a risk of severe events that is twice the risk than the age- and sex-matched Italian population. This excess of risk is mainly explained by the EDSS score and comorbidities, whereas a residual increase of hospitalization risk was observed in patients on anti-CD20 therapies and a decrease in people on interferon

    DMTs and Covid-19 severity in MS: a pooled analysis from Italy and France

    We evaluated the effect of DMTs on Covid-19 severity in patients with MS, with a pooled-analysis of two large cohorts from Italy and France. The association of baseline characteristics and DMTs with Covid-19 severity was assessed by multivariate ordinal-logistic models and pooled by a fixed-effect meta-analysis. 1066 patients with MS from Italy and 721 from France were included. In the multivariate model, anti-CD20 therapies were significantly associated (OR = 2.05, 95%CI = 1.39–3.02, p < 0.001) with Covid-19 severity, whereas interferon indicated a decreased risk (OR = 0.42, 95%CI = 0.18–0.99, p = 0.047). This pooled-analysis confirms an increased risk of severe Covid-19 in patients on anti-CD20 therapies and supports the protective role of interferon

    An indirect interferential method for measuring the deformations of structures in temperature

    The dimensional stability of a base of ceramic glass, designed to constitute a stable reference frame, has been determined with interferometric measurements in flowing air with variable temperature. An interferometric arrangement composed by one beam splitter and two mirrors was assembled directly on the base. The irradiance I(t) as a function of temperature at constant pressure was collected in the highest order of the interference pattern, I(t) shows a cyclic behavior, due to the superposition of the air refractivity variations and of the mechanical stretching of the frame. The component of the signal due to the air refractivity alone can be regarded as the reference signal, with a valuable periodicity in the inverse-temperature space, i.e. in the expansion coefficients space. The remaining component corresponding to the deformations of the supporting structure can be evaluated as a phase modulation of the reference signal. Preliminary results of measurements show that an equivalent thermal expansion coefficient of the order of magnitude of ±2·10-8 °C-1 can be probed.
